Serena Confalonieri designs the mural ‘Città Studi’ for the initiative “A name in every neighborhood”, conceived and promoted by YesMilano and the Municipality of Milan – Office for Art in Public Spaces and supported by Fondazione di Comunità Milano (Community Foundation of Milan). In several Milanese neighborhoods different artists will create urban artworks which will represent each district, by displaying their names, in order to represent their own identities and sense of community. This project is part of a wider one: the Neighborhood by neighborhood campaign, conceived by Milano & partners for the rediscovery and enhancement of the different neighborhoods of Milan.
The graphic design by Serena Confalonieri was painted during the week of 12th of July 2021 by Orticanoodles, a Milanese collective of muralists that also curated the project. The mural is located in via Bassini 26, in the north-eastern area of the city, and it occupies the eastern façade of AVIS headquarters (the Italian Association of blood donors) and its enclosure walls. Part of the artwork is dedicated to this association, with the goal of raising awareness among the population on the issue of blood donation.
The letters designed by Serena Confalonieri therefore represent a tribute to different characteristic elements of the neighborhood: from the architectures – two “T”s are inspired by the mosaics of the buildings from the 1960s and by the ornaments of the 1920s villas, the “A” resembles the Faculty of Architecture iconic entrance, while the first “I” is a tribute to Giò Ponti-, to the many university faculties that have their headquarters in Città Studi – the “C” recalls an open book seen from above and the “S ” the Asclepius’ stick, symbol of Medicine, the ” I “Astrophysics and” U “the Faculty of Engineering, while the remaining” T “a chemical molecule -. Also the flower shaped “D” symbolizes the Botanical Garden in via Golgi, while the accent recalls a drop of blood for AVIS.
The graphic design also extends to the enclosure wall: in each metope we find a letter of the acronym AVIS, depicted with shapes and colors related to the donation of blood.

Serena Confalonieri firma il murale ‘Città Studi’ per l’iniziativa “Un nome in ogni quartiere”, ideata e promossa da YesMilano e Comune di Milano – Ufficio Arte Negli Spazi Pubblici e sostenuto dalla Fondazione di Comunità Milano. Numerosi quartieri della città saranno omaggiati attraverso opere di arte urbana che riporteranno il nome del quartiere, a rappresentarne l’identità e il senso di comunità. Il progetto si inserisce nella più ampia cornice della campagna Neighborhood by neighborhood, ideata da Milano&partners per la riscoperta e la valorizzazione dei quartieri di Milano.
Realizzato durante la settimana del 12 luglio 2021, il disegno grafico di Serena Confalonieri è stato dipinto da Orticanoodles, collettivo muralista milanese impegnato anche nella curatela del progetto. L’opera d’arte murale trova spazio in via Bassini 26, nella zona nord-orientale della città, sviluppandosi sulla facciata del palazzo e sul muro di recinzione della sede dell’AVIS, a cui è dedicato anche parte dell’opera, con l’obiettivo di sensibilizzare la popolazione sul tema della donazione del sangue.
Le lettere disegnate da Serena Confalonieri rappresentano dunque un omaggio a diversi elementi caratteristici del quartiere: dall’architettura – le due “T” sono ispirate ai mosaici dei palazzi della vecchia Milano ed ai fregi delle ville anni ’20, la “A” riprende l’ingresso della Facoltà di Architettura, mentre la prima “I” è un omaggio a Giò Ponti-, alle numerose facoltà universitarie che in Città Studi hanno la loro sede – la “C” richiama un libro aperto visto dall’alto e la “S” il bastone di Asclepio simbolo della Medicina, la “I” l’Astrofisica e la “U” la Facoltà di ingegneria, la rimanente “T” una molecola chimica -. Infine, il fiore della “D” simboleggia l’Orto Botanico di via Golgi e l’accento richiama invece una goccia di sangue per l’AVIS.
Il disegno grafico si estende anche al muro di recinzione, dove in ogni metopa viene raffigurata una lettera dell’acronimo AVIS con forme e colori legati alla donazione del sangue.
